Malaysia is 3rd in South East Asia for (workplace) English proficiency

Teech sez: This is a great piece of news that I want to share with all of you out there. In terms of English proficiency it seems working Malaysians aren't that bad after all. Bravo!

(BUT then again, this data is based on an online self assessment. Real world proficiency though, as we researchers know, is a whole different ballgame. It should be interesting to check REAL WORLD proficiency of young Malaysian professionals too methinks...)

KUALA LUMPUR, June 7 (news items by the Malaysian National News Agency, BERNAMA)

When it comes to English proficiency, Malaysians are not at par with their neighbouring counterparts, with the country ranking third out of five countries in the English Language Assessment (ELA).

It has been some time since I took 'GELL' on the road. Today's 'show' at MARA Poly Tech College reminds me again of the fun to be had when we try to learn English with an open mind and to see the language as it is - a useful asset to have for the future, no more, no less.

As there are quite a number of comments and follow up responses on the GELL community on FaceBook (and also my personal profile), permit me to share with you 9 things to be learned from the event today.

Even if you couldn't be there with us (you missed a hell of a crazy show, I tell you), I'm sure you can still take these nine 'lessons' with you as you work as hard as you can to be a Good English Language Learner...

Using more than one language delays Alzheimer (brain) disease

Nov, 2010 — A Canadian science team has found dramatic evidence that speaking two languages can help delay the onset of Alzheimer's symptoms by as much as five years.

The latest study, led by Baycrest's Rotman Research Institute, examined the clinical records of more than 200 patients diagnosed with probable Alzheimer's disease.

The researchers found that those who have spoken two or more languages consistently over many years experienced a delay in the onset of their symptoms by as much as five years. The study is published in the November 9th issue of the science journal 'Neurology'.

The science team includes cognitive researcher Dr. Fergus Craik of the Rotman Research Institute; Dr. Ellen Bialystok of York University, an expert in bilingualism research; and Dr. Morris Freedman, a clinician in the diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer's and other dementias.

The Good English Language Learner (or GELL) community on FaceBook was accepted as an e-learning resource within the Web 2.0 ERC (European Resource Centre) mega project on SATURDAY, 9TH OF OCTOBER, 2010...

 
This great piece of news proves that the GELL community is a useful Web 2.0 resource "for schools, higher education and adult education" (refer to the Web 2.0 ERC site) in the European Union and beyond.

CONGRATULATIONS to the now more than 2,000+ Good English Language Learner community members (also called GELL-y/ies) on FaceBook, for helping each other to learn English in a fun but informative way. I truly believe that this is just our first recognition and there will be more to come in the future if we can keep it up!

WATCH A FILM!

Really! Watch this film, entitled 'My Fair Lady'. It is an old movie (1964 I think) but in the movie you will learn many things about proper English pronunciation and the many variations in existence, even among native English speakers in ye olde England.

LISTEN TO THE 'QUEEN'S ENGLISH'!

Listen to English speakers, who speak 'The Queen's English', it remains the official standard of spoken English in the world today. The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is the channel of choice for learning proper English pronunciation if you ask me.

BUY PRONUNCIATION TEXTBOOKS!

Learn or improve English pronunciation by listening to the CDs that come with these textbooks. They allow learners to 'pronounce along' and thus familiarise themselves with English words, phrases and sentences. You can progress at your own pace by listening to it as much or as little as you want.

SPEAK A LOT OF ENGLISH WITH OTHERS!

Practice speaking English with someone who speaks well, and don't be afraid of making mistakes, because conversing in English is the most active and direct way to master proper pronunciation.

CREATE MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR SPEAKING!

Many students complain that they cannot speak well or that their pronunciation is terrible. If you are still in school or college there are many activities that can help you improve AS LONG AS YOU WORK HARD AT IT!

For example, you can arrange group reading sessions with like-minded friends or acquaintances so that everyone benefits and can help one another with the correct pronunciation. The more you read aloud, the more confidence you will build in public speaking and the more your English pronunciation is likely to improve.

Your pronunciation of English really matters... but why?

Firstly:

Rightly or wrongly, the way that you speak is one of the first things that people notice about you. Do you know that people will judge your background, education and social standing just by the way you speak?

Secondly:

Even if you can already communicate well in English if you do not speak clearly enough, people around you will not understand you and they might not even want to talk to you. Why? Because it is just too tiring to try to understand you!

Thirdly:

Listening and understanding go hand in hand. If you do not know how different words are pronounced you will not improve your understanding of English.

Hello again readers! I hope that you have been trying all the tips that I have shared with you so far, with regards to your English language skill. In this article I hope to share with you some simple tips to improve your speaking skill.

Oh yes! Just to let you know, when we talk about speaking in English the skill itself can be divided into two areas, namely fluency and accuracy.

In order to become a really good speaker of English, you must have BOTH fluency and accuracy. Having one without the other is not good enough for a GELL!

For many international students of English, listening is the most difficult skill to acquire and to master. Basically, nobody can teach you how to listen well, so you must try to work hard to make this skill a part of your life.

Let me share with you a secret, even though it is hard to practice your listening skill in English – the more you persevere the more you will start to enjoy listening, because you will REALLY understand what is being said by people who are using English.

Imagine you are watching ‘Spongebob Squarepants’ in the original English language version. You think that Patrick, Spongebob’s friend has just cracked a joke. But, you are not laughing. In fact, you cannot laugh because you really do not understand what Spongebob and Patrick had said to each other!

Whenever I mention writing to my students, they will always moan and groan and pull a long face. Let’s face the fact – writing is not easy and not everyone can become a good writer in the English language.

Is this true? NOT NECESSARILY! Even though not all of us can become excellent writers like William Shakespeare or John Grisham, ALL of us can learn how to write using good grammar and with good creativity.

One of the biggest problem for Malaysian students in terms of writing in English is that they are only good in one area at a time. So for example, your English grammar is okay but your essay lacks imagination and so it fails to get the high grade that you want.

Some students have a bigger problem when they write in English because their grammar is very bad and they do not know what to write whenever they are asked to do so!
